The new Hyundai Santro has been revealed in India, essentially arriving as the long-awaited successor to the Atos. And it’s scheduled to come to South Africa in 2019.

The Santro – which may end up adopting the Atos badge when it arrives on local shores – will slot in below the Grand i10. The Korean automaker says the Santro is built on a new platform, with ABS (with EBD) and a driver’s airbag set to be offered as standard.

Just two images have thus far been released, with the full reveal expected later in October.

Power (in India, at least) will come courtesy of the brand’s naturally aspirated 1,1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Hyundai says the Santro will be its first model to be offered with an in-house-developed automated manual transmission (a manual will likely ship standard).

Inside, the city car will offer air-conditioning vents for rear passengers, plus what the brand describes as “superior headroom” and “good all-round visibility”. A seven-inch touchscreen system will also be offered in the Indian market, complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.

In September 2018, Stanley Anderson, Hyundai Automotive SA’s director of sales and operations, seemingly confirmed the Atos nameplate would make a comeback to local shores, saying the brand was aiming to bring in the new model during the first quarter of 2019 “for under R150 000”.
