Toyota in Europe has released pricing for its new GR Yaris, opening a pre-sales reservation service for the box-fresh hot hatch.

The Japanese firm says customers in “selected European markets” have the option to register their interest via “an online platform, offline contact methods and by contacting their local Toyota retailer”. Those who sign up will be given priority access to purchase a car, with first deliveries expected on the continent towards the end of 2020.

So, what sort of pricing are we looking at here? Well, Toyota says the new all-paw GR Yaris will start from €33 200 in Germany, a country it describes as a “key sportscar market”. A direct conversion at the current exchange rate – which, we must point out, is rarely an accurate measure when attempting to predict local pricing – works out to a hefty R568 000. In the United Kingdom, pricing will kick off at £29 995, which translates to an even higher R595 000.

Of course, the three-door GR Yaris has yet to be confirmed for a local launch, with Toyota South Africa Motors saying only it has "requested the local introduction" of the new model with the business case "currently under study".

As a reminder, the new GR Yaris employs a turbocharged 1,6-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine offering 192 kW and 360 N.m in European spec (and 200 kW/370 N.m in Japanese spec). Toyota says the hot hatch is expected to hit 100 km/h from standstill in “less than 5,5 seconds”.

In Europe, the GR Yaris is set to be launched in a single, high-specification grade, although customers will be able choose from two option packs: circuit and convenience.
