Volkswagen has released fresh promotional footage of its new Golf 8 GTI being driven both at Killarney International Raceway and around Cape Town.

The short clip, published on YouTube by the Volkswagen News channel, shows two men (a father and son, perhaps?) reminiscing about the Mk1 Golf GTI.

They then pull the covers off an original Golf GTI, before the older gentleman heads out onto the racetrack. After a few grin-inducing corners, the younger fellow joins him on the circuit in the new Golf 8 GTI ... and comes flying past.

The video goes on to show the latest version of the Wolfsburg-based firm’s hot hatch heading to various parts of Cape Town’s city centre, before hitting the open road and landing up at some slices of tarmac familiar to most who enjoy driving in the Western Cape.

As a reminder, the new GTI draws its urge from a version of VW’s familiar EA888 engine. The turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit now delivers 180 kW and 370 N.m. Transmission options include a six-speed manual gearbox and a seven-speed dual-clutch cog-swapper, although only the latter will be offered when the front-driven Golf 8 GTI arrives in South Africa towards the end of 2020.
