Mercedes-Benz has revealed parts of the cabin of the next-generation S-Class, with the flagship saloon’s interior featuring up to five screens (three of which are sited in the rear).

The W223-generation S-Class – which will be fully revealed in September 2020 – will also debut the second generation of the Stuttgart-based firm’s infotainment MBUX system.

Benz says the cabin is “even more digital and intelligent” than before, revealing that as many as five large screens (some with OLED technology and haptic feedback) will be employed. There’s even a new 3D driver display that allows a “spatial view” at the touch of a button.

Indeed, the company says the number of “classic controls” has been greatly reduced, with the upcoming model set to feature 27 fewer mechanical switches than the outgoing version. Operation will thus be by touching and swiping, voice control, “natural” hand gestures and even something the German firm calls “gaze control”. That said, “key functions” such as turning on the lights or windscreen wipers will still be operated directly.

The "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant, meanwhile, will become capable of “even more dialogue”, with certain actions no longer requiring the activation keyword (such as accepting a telephone call or displaying the navigation map).

Furthermore, Mercedes says the second-gen MBUX arrangement will be able to “network” with a wide range of vehicle systems and sensor data. In addition, a new head-up display system will be offered, complete with augmented reality content.

Interestingly, fingerprint, face and voice recognition will be implemented to allow access to individual settings or verification of digital payment processes from the vehicle.
