Opel has announced that its next-generation Corsa hatchback will be produced exclusively at the Zaragoza plant in Spain, from 2019.

The German brand furthermore confirmed that an electric variant of the small hatchback would be built on the production line starting in 2020. This, the automaker pointed out, would make Zaragoza the first PSA Group plant to produce a fully electric Opel model in Europe.

“This is an important step forward for the Zaragoza plant and marks the beginning of a new era,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.

“Zaragoza will continue to play an important role in the industrial footprint of Groupe PSA,” added Lohscheller, confirming additional investment from the French group in the Spanish plant.

Opel said the sixth-generation Corsa would be one of four electrified models in its portfolio by 2020. According to the brand’s latest strategic plan, all Opel passenger car models in the European market would have an electrified version by 2024.

The Zaragoza plant began building the Corsa back in 1982. The PSA Group currently also produces the Mokka X, Crossland X and Citroën C3 Aircross at the Spanish facility.
