Peugeot South Africa has added a fresh base model to its 3008 range, fitting the newcomer with a turbocharged 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine and a manual gearbox.

Dubbed the 3008 1,2T Active Limited Edition, the local arm of the French automaker says it will be importing the model “in limited quantities” (exactly how many units will be coming to SA is unclear). It is priced at R369 900, which makes it R45 000 cheaper than the 1,6T Active (which, it must be noted, features a six-speed automatic transmission as standard).

While the five other derivatives in the local 3008 range draw their urge from either a turbocharged 1,6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (121 kW/240 N.m) or a 2,0-litre turbodiesel (110 kW/370 N.m), this latest variant employs a 1,2-litre turbo-triple (as used by the facelifted 308) worth 96 kW and 230 N.m, and mated to a six-speed manual cog-swapper. Peugeot claims the smaller mill sips at an average of 5,5 L/100 km.

Standard features of the 1,2T Active Limited Edition include 17-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and hill assist. As with other models in the range, the new variant boasts a 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard, along with an eight-inch colour touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay.

In terms of safety kit, the 1,2T Active features six airbags, automatic emergency braking, ABS with EBD, emergency brake assist, traction control and dynamic stability control. A driver attention alert system, driver attention fatigue warning, lane departure warning and IsoFix child seat anchors are also included. The standard three-year/100 000 km warranty and four-year/60 000 km service plan apply.

In June 2018, Peugeot SA reduced pricing of its two diesel-powered 3008 derivatives, after earlier trimming two variants from the range by effectively scrapping the Allure+ and GT Line+ models.
