A high-ranking Porsche executive says hybrid systems could end up helping the naturally aspirated engine survive.

Frank-Steffen Walliser, the Zuffenhausen-based firm’s vice-president for the 911 and 718 product lines, told Autocar the company was “very motivated” to keep its naturally aspirated engines alive.

Interestingly, Walliser suggested Porsche was considering the electrification of its free-breathing engines as a possible solution, as the industry continued to grapple with ever-more stringent emissions regulations.

“Low-rev electric motor torque and a high-rev normally aspirated engine would fit perfectly together,” he told the publication.

“It could help a normally aspirated engine to survive,” he added.

In May 2020, Walliser suggested a fully electric version of the 911 would not happen on his watch, saying he does “not believe in an electric 911”.
