Porsche has effectively built the last air-cooled 911 Turbo ... some 20 years after production officially ceased. Yes, this is "Project Gold", a nut-and-bolt restoration project that uses an original 993 bodyshell fitted with genuine parts.

Serving to celebrate 70 years of Porsche, the project is also a showcase of Porsche Classic’s restoration capabilities.

Project Gold is finished in a golden yellow metallic colour also seen on the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. It has furthermore been fitted with a set of black wheels with gold highlights as well as side air intakes that were optional for the 911 Turbo in 1998. The cabin features black leather seats with yellow contrast stitching.

The restoration project took Porsche Classic one-and-a-half years to complete. First, the bodyshell was given modern corrosion protection and painting, then it was assembled at the Porsche restoration workshop in Stuttgart, where a new 331 kW twin-turbo 3,6-litre flat-six engine was installed, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel drive system (sourced from the Porsche Classic catalogue).

The final touch was a hand-stamped chassis number that represents the last series production number for this generation. In total, 6 500 genuine classic parts were used to put this 993 911 Turbo together.

The vehicle, which Porsche says is "limited to use on private tracks", will then be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Atlanta in late October 2018. The proceeds will be donated to the Ferry Porsche Foundation, a non-profit organisation established earlier this year to mark the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” celebrations.
