BMW South Africa has quietly expanded its X2 range from five to six derivatives, adding a new sDrive20d model to the line-up.

As with other X2 variants in the local range, the new front-wheel-drive turbodiesel derivative is offered in M Sport and M Sport X trim. The former will cost you R649 444 while the latter will start at R679 344.

The sDrive20d employs the Munich-based firm’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder oil-burning unit, which sends 140 kW (at 4 000 r/min) and 400 N.m (from 1 750 to 2 250 r/min) to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

This engine is, of course, shared with the all-paw X2 xDrive20d we tested in 2018. For the record, the all-wheel-drive model commands a R50 947 premium over the new front-driven version, regardless of which trim level is selected.

As a reminder, the local X2 range kicks off with the 103 kW/220 N.m sDrive18i model (from R577 903 in manual) and tops out with the 225 kW/450 N.m M35i flagship (for R815 172).
