The facelifted Suzuki Ciaz sedan has been unveiled in India, powered by what the Japanese brand describes as a “revolutionary” new 1,5-litre petrol engine.

While the Ciaz currently offered in South Africa draws its urge from a naturally aspirated 1,4-litre petrol unit delivering 70 kW and 130 N.m to the front wheels, the updated version of the sedan employs a “smart hybrid” set-up with a lithium-ion battery.

This new K15 powertrain makes 77 kW at 6 000 r/min and 138 N.m at 4 400 r/min, and features an idle stop-start system, a “torque assist” function and even regenerative braking. Suzuki promises that it will offer “best-in-class” fuel efficiency (a claim of 4,6 L/100 km is listed). In India, Maruti Suzuki will also continue to offer a 1,3-litre diesel option.

Styling changes include a new grille and front bumper arrangement, fresh headlamps with daytime running lights, LED foglamps, LED taillamps and new 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

Inside, the updated model gains new Birch blonde wood grain accents; satin chrome highlights on the facia and door trims; a new 4,2-inch multi-information TFT display and an “eco illumination” function for the speedometer that changes colour based on the driving pattern.

Suzuki Auto SA tells CARmag.co.za that the facelifted Ciaz is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019 (although the engine line-up has yet to be confirmed).
