The head of design at the BMW Group admits building a sportscar to rival the Porsche 911 is “a nice idea”.

Autocar asked BMW Group design director Adrian van Hooydonk what he thought of rumours the Munich-based firm could revive the 6 Series badge for use on a 911 competitor.

“It’s a nice idea. Maybe we should work on that,” the 55-year-old told the publication.

The 6 Series, of course, is all but dead with the coupé no longer in production. The slow-selling 6 Series Gran Turismo, meanwhile, is still offered in some markets but was discontinued locally in July 2019.

With the 8 Series now functioning as the flagship coupé in the German firm’s range, is there space for a new (smaller) 6 Series to tackle the likes of the 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT coupé? Only time will tell…
