BMW has reportedly filed an application to trademark the “X8 M” badge in Europe, leading to renewed speculation a full-fat version of the rumoured new flagship SUV is on the cards.

The folks over at X7Forum.com were the first to uncover the trademark application, digging up the filing in Germany’s DPMA database and suggesting a market launch will take place in 2021.

BMWBlog adds the rumoured X8 will be offered in three variants, including the aforementioned high-performance M derivative. According to the report, the X8 M will draw its urge from a revised version of the firm’s familiar turbocharged 4,4-litre V8, electrified to produce as much as 520 kW.

The rumour of an X8 has been around for a few years, with Klaus Fröhlich, member of the board responsible for development at BMW, admitting in 2017 such a vehicle was under consideration.
