Well, that’s an interesting thought. A digital artist has created a render of the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok in body-on-frame SUV guise.

If such a model were to materialise, it would take on the popular Toyota Fortuner, not to mention the (also locally built) Ford Everest, the underrated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the slower-selling Isuzu MU-X.

Shoeb Kalania created the rendering for IndianAutosBlog.com, drawing inspiration from the single second-generation Amarok teaser sketch VW has thus far revealed.

Of course, the next Amarok will effectively be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger under a broad alliance between the two firms. That means it’s not entirely inconceivable the Wolfsburg-based firm could offer an SUV version developed alongside the next Everest (the latter being Ranger-based, after all).

Back in 2016, a VW executive in Australia suggested an Amarok-based SUV was on the table, although added if it did reach production it would arrive only after the second-gen bakkie. Around that time, the German brand also revealed its seven-seater (unibody) Atlas, which is a little larger than an Amarok-based (ladder-frame) SUV would be.
