Honda has reportedly filed to trademark the “ZR-V” badge, suggesting the Japanese firm could be prepping a new crossover.

According to AutoIndustriya.com, Honda’s application to trademark the ZR-V nameplate with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) was filed in mid-April 2020.

As the publication points out, the Japanese brand has thus far reserved the “RV” suffix for models in its range of SUVs and crossovers, applying it to the likes of the BR-V, HR-V and CR-V (as well as the WR-V rumoured to be on its way to local shores). Of course, there was also an MPV in the shape of the since-departed FR-V.

Interestingly, though, the nomenclature also extends to models unfamiliar to South African buyers, such as the UR-V and XR-V marketed in China.

Still, it remains to be seen exactly what sort of crossover Honda seemingly plans to apply the ZR-V badge to ... that's if it ends up using the moniker at all. A trademark application is, after all, by no means a guarantee the name will actually be used.
