A fresh report out of the United Kingdom claims Jaguar Land Rover plans to build a pair of small crossovers on a BMW platform, while also using its soon-to-expand agreement with the German firm to revive the Freelander badge.

According to Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW are set to expand their partnership – which already officially involves electric drive units and is set to (unofficially) move into engine supply – to include the sharing of an “advanced small car platform”.

The report says Jaguar plans to build two crossovers – one in a conventional body style and the other bearing a coupé-like roofline – on BMW’s latest FAAR transverse-engined architecture. Both are expected to wear badges using the “-Pace” suffix (with earlier rumours suggesting monikers of A-Pace and B-Pace were on the cards).

Autocar furthermore claims this rumoured foray into platform sharing would “open the way” for the British firm to create an “entry-level” Land Rover model that would likely inherit the Freelander badge. This new Freelander, claims the report, would be an “urban focused” yet “highly capable” small off-roader slotting in below the new Defender and inspired by the DC100 concept revealed back in 2011.

In addition, the report speculates the next-generation versions of the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport – both of which are admittedly some way off – could be built on BMW underpinnings.
