A new report out of the United Kingdom suggests Land Rover is planning a high-performance SVR-badged version of its revived Defender, with power set to come from a BMW-sourced V8.

According to Auto Express, the upcoming Defender SVR will employ a version of BMW’s latest twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 engine – rather than the British automaker’s familiar 5,0-litre supercharged V8 – under an extension of an existing agreement between the two firms.

This powerplant, the report adds, is expected to be used in other range-topping Jaguar Land Rover products too, including the F-Type, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

Interestingly, Auto Express says the V8 will make about 370 kW in the Defender SVR, some way short of the 460 kW it generates in the M8 Competition. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are expected to ship standard.

The report suggests only the five-door Defender 110 will get the full-fat SVR treatment (at first, at least), with the launch likely to take place in 2021.

Earlier in October 2019, another British publication reported Land Rover was preparing to launch a flagship Defender variant wearing the “130” badge, with seating for as many as eight.
