A fresh report out of Australia claims Mercedes-Benz has no plans to build a full-fat Mercedes-AMG GLB45 variant.

According to CarsGuide, “multiple” officials at the Stuttgart-based firm confirmed that a GLB45 – which would have employed the 310 kW four-pot from the A45 and CLA45 – is not on the cards.

The GLB range does, of course, already include a 35-badged derivative, revealed back in August 2019 with 225 kW and 400 N.m from its turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder heart (yes, the same unit used by the A35 and CLA35).

The report added Mercedes-Benz’s reluctance to offer a GLB45 stemmed from an intention to differentiate the newcomer from the upcoming second-generation GLA (which will to be offered in 45 form).

The firm’s new GLB range is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2020, comprising the front-driven GLB250 and the all-wheel-drive GLB220d at launch.
