A fresh report out of Germany suggests Daimler’s cost-cutting drive will include the axing of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupé and cabriolet body styles as well as deeper job cuts.

According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, Daimler boss Ola Källenius plans to shed some 15 000 jobs by 2022, up from the figure of 10 000 quoted in November 2019.

In addition, the firm reportedly intends to further trim its model line-up, after earlier in 2020 confirming the end of the line for the X-Class double-cab bakkie.

According to the report, the coupé and cabriolet versions of the outgoing S-Class will not be replaced (a rumour also reported by Autocar), with Mercedes instead focussing on the seventh-generation sedan body style.

Furthermore, Handelsblatt said the future of the B-Class was “uncertain”, adding the CLS and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé would eventually be consolidated into a single electric coupé.
