A fresh report out of Australia suggests GWM’s new P Series bakkie could feature different names in different markets.

According to CarsGuide, Great Wall Motors’ application to trademark the “Poer” nameplate Down Under has been approved. Earlier reports suggested the new Chinese bakkie would wear the “Cannon” badge.

The publication claims the “Poer” name combines the words “power, peak and perfection”. As the report points out, however, the trademarking of new badges is by no means a guarantee they will be used on production vehicles.

“We’re still working through the naming process. But we have not yet confirmed naming for Australia or New Zealand,” a GWM spokesperson told CarsGuide.

GWM earlier said the new P Series bakkie would “compete head-on” with big-sellers such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Running on a new P71 platform, GWM says the Chongqing-built bakkie measures 5 410 mm long, 1 934 mm wide and 1 886 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3 230 mm.

Power will come from a turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol engine, delivering 140 kW and 360 N.m via a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Reports also suggest a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is on the cards, generating 120 kW and 400 N.m. This oil-burner will be offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the aforementioned eight-speed self-shifter.

In 2019, GWM’s local arm told CARmag.co.za the new bakkie range was scheduled to arrive in South Africa before the end of 2020. It's unclear what name SA-spec models will use...
