A fresh report out of South Korea claims Hyundai will launch a new Tucson N “within the next two years”, with the high-performance SUV set to outmuscle Volkswagen’s new Tiguan R.

According to thekoreancarblog.com, the next-generation Tucson range will be topped by an N-badged performance variant (the current generation includes only an N Line derivative, offered in Europe).

That fresh flagship N model, suggests the publication, will employ a turbocharged 2,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine developing more than 250 kW. The new Tiguan R, of course, makes 235 kW from its turbocharged 2,0-litre heart.

In April 2020, the same publication reported Hyundai was testing a new turbocharged 2,5-litre engine for use its N division’s performance models, publishing a photograph of a Veloster N test mule complete with a sticker on its driver’s door listing a 2,5 T-GDi unit engine.

A similarly sized unit is, of course, already used by the Genesis G80, where it delivers 207 kW.

Hyundai’s high-performance division currently builds the i30 N hot hatch (and Fastback) and the aforementioned Veloster N – both of which employ a blown 2,0-litre engine – with a Kona N seemingly next in line.
