A fresh report out of the United Kindgom suggests the next-generation 308 range will include an all-wheel-drive hot hatch variant, although it isn’t expected to wear the GTi badge.
According to Autocar, the French firm’s new 308 midsize hatchback is due to hit the market in 2022 (with a reveal pencilled in for late in 2021), running on an upgraded version of the current EMP2 architecture.
The publication claims the hottest version of the five-door hatch will feature an electrified powertrain comprising a turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor driving the front axle, and a second electric motor powering the rear wheels.
The result, according to Autocar, will be an all-paw hot hatch with more than 220 kW positioned to take on the likes of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf 8 R. Interestingly, Peugeot will reportedly not slap the GTi badge on this newcomer’s rump, instead positioning the sporty hatch under its fresh Peugeot Sport Engineered sub-brand.
