What would the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI look like as a cabriolet? Well, a digital artist has come up with the answer.

X-Tomi Design created this rendering of a Golf 8 GTI Cabriolet, lopping off two of the hot hatch’s doors as well as its roof. It’s a neat job, if you ask us.

So, will the Wolfsburg-based firm put such a vehicle into production? Well, it seems highly unlikely, considering the seventh-generation Golf GTI didn’t ever go topless (the last version was, of course, based on a Mk6 body).

In addition, in August 2019, VW executive Jürgen Stackmann suggested the new T-Roc Cabriolet would effectively replace the soft-top Golf as the company’s only convertible.

As a reminder, the new five-door GTI hot hatch draws its urge from a version of VW’s familiar EA888 engine. The turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit now delivers 180 kW and 370 N.m, directed to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch cog-swapper.
