A fresh report out of Germany claims the new Volkswagen Caddy will switch to a version of the firm’s MQB platform, allowing it to pilfer engines from the Golf 8 range.

According to Autobild, the use of MQB underpinnings (which, of course, should lend the new Caddy a more car-like driving demeanour) will allow VW to fit the latest powerplants and technology.

Late in 2019, VW released a pair of teaser sketches, giving us an idea of the styling set to be applied to the new model (seen here in panel van guise). The Wolfsburg-based firm says the fourth-generation Caddy will be “100 percent new” (which makes sense, considering the outgoing generation debuted as long ago as 2003).

Despite the expected switch in underpinnings, VW claims the new Caddy will still boast “high cargo capacity and great variability”. The company also promises sportier styling, although we suspect the oversized alloys, oddly positioned side mirrors and red-painted tow hook won’t make it through to production…
