Since the previous-generation BMW 1 Series was closely related to the current 2 Series, there’s a fair possibility the next-generation compact sports coupé will feature similar styling to the recently revealed (F40) 1 Series.

However, seeing as the new model makes use of the BMW Group's UKL2 platform, it’s now front-wheel drive ... which won’t work well for the sportier versions of the next 2 Series. That's why it seems likely the next generation of the sports coupé will move to the firm's CLAR underpinnings.

The render above, penned by X-Tomi Design, employs the 1 Series’ bold new face (complete with large kidney grilles and headlamps). Along the side, you'll notice a set of muscular panels (but fairly subdued wheelarches). There’s no view of the rear, but we can see a short overhang and a hint of the G20-generation 3 Series’ taillamp design.

Along with this, the digital artist has also given us a look at what a possible new BMW M1 could look like, despite the brand confirming this is not a product planned for this generation. Here we see the 1 Series take the shape of a hyper hatch with an aggressive bumper design complemented by a black M Sport grille.

The arches are flared at the front, while the rear retains a flatter design. The hatch sports a small wing as a finishing touch which is interestingly more subtle than the one found in the car’s official M Performance parts catalogue. In fact, compared with the M Performance parts show car, this render is fairly subtle. Also, notice the alloy wheels from the BMW M2 Competition.
