BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse has confirmed the next-generation 7 Series sedan range will be topped by a fully electric variant, leading to speculation the flagship will wear the "Mi7" badge.

During a presentation at the BMW Group’s annual accounts press conference, Zipse confirmed the upcoming seventh-generation 7 Series range would include an all-electric option.

“The next-generation 7 Series will be available with four drivetrain variants: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. All drivetrains will be based on a single architecture. And the top, most powerful 7 Series will be fully electric,” said the 56-year-old chairman of the board.

As BMWBlog points out, this suggests the 6,6-litre V12 employed by the current-generation 7 Series flagship M760Li will be killed off, which lines up neatly with earlier rumours.

Citing unnamed sources, the publication furthermore claims the new flagship will be called the BMW Mi7, featuring a 100 kWh battery, a peak output of “at least” 485 kW (compared with the M760Li’s 430 kW) and a range of around 640 km.
