The next-generation Ford Ranger (including the Raptor) will reportedly be offered with a V6 turbodiesel heart. So, what do we know about this engine?

Well, as the original report from CarExpert.com.au pointed out, the 3,0-litre turbodiesel engine is already in service in the F-150 in North America.

Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, this “Power Stroke” six-pot features a single turbocharger (as opposed to the two employed by the 2,0-litre unit in the current Ranger Raptor).

In the F-150, it generates peak power of 186 kW at 3 250 r/min and maximum torque of 597 N.m from as low as 1 750 r/min. It features a compacted graphite iron block with aluminium heads and a compression ratio of 16:1.

If the new Ranger – which the report suggests is due towards the end of 2022 – were to adopt the engine unchanged, it’d pretty much match the current Volkswagen Amarok’s high output V6, which offers 190 kW (plus 10 kW on overboost) and 580 N.m.

Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind VW has signed a contract with Ford for the Blue Oval brand to develop a successor for the Amarok, effectively confirming the bakkie will be based on the next-generation Ranger. From where we’re standing, it seems likely Ford's V6 will be used by the second-gen Amarok, too...
