A new report out of India claims Suzuki is working on a longer version of its Jimny, with the plucky little off-roader set to be upgraded from three to five doors.

According to CarDekho, “insider sources” at Maruti Suzuki have confirmed a “more practical” five-door version of the Jimny is on the cards for India. The report claims the new version will arrive in that country by 2021.

While the three-door model measures just 3 625 mm nose to tail, CarDekho says the longer variant will still be compact at less than four metres in length. However, it will gain added rear-passenger space and a more generous luggage capacity.

Interestingly, the publication furthermore claims the five-door Jimny could wear the familiar “Gypsy” badge.

The news comes after Suzuki confirmed plans to pull its in-demand three-door Jimny from sale in Europe before stricter emissions regulations take effect in 2021.
