A high-ranking Toyota executive in Australia says the Japanese firm currently has “no plans” to introduce a GR-branded Corolla hot hatch.

Speaking to motoring.com.au, Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice-president of sales and marketing, poured cold water on rumours the company would soon introduce a rival to Volkswagen’s popular Golf GTI.

“No plans at this stage for that car, the GR Corolla,” Hanley told the publication.

Hanley added while buyers were “very open to performance cars”, they had to come at the “appropriate time and it has to be the appropriate product”.

“So we would never rule it out, but we don’t have any announcements to make on Corolla GR,” he said.

Of course, Toyota already sells the Corolla GR Sport (pictured above) in Europe, but rumours had suggested a full-fat hot hatch was also on the cards.

Indeed, in February 2019 a senior Japanese executive at the firm said a “Corolla GRMN is certainly realistic”, adding “we are already working on that”...
