A fresh report out of Japan claims the upcoming Toyota Yaris GR-4 hot hatch will employ a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive.

A prototype version of the Japanese firm’s upcoming hot hatch was due to be revealed at the recent Rally Australia, but the unveiling was pushed back after the event was scrapped due to wildfires Down Under.

According to Japan’s Motor Magazine, Toyota is likely to delay the reveal of the Yaris GR-4 prototype until early in 2020. Even more interesting, though, is the publication’s claim the little hot hatch will draw its urge from a turbocharged 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, sending drive to all four wheels (hence the “4” in the prototype’s name). At this stage, the powerplant's peak outputs are not known.

Motor Magazine furthermore reports production of the final version of the Yaris GR-4 won’t be limited, as was the case with the previous-generation Yaris GRMN.
