Remember the new Peugeot Landtrek revealed in February 2020? Well, a digital artist has released renders showing what a (highly unlikely) GTi-badged version might look like.

Russian artist Aksyonov Nikita created the images, using the double-cab version of the bakkie as a base and adding a two-tone paintjob, fresh alloy wheels (framing red brake callipers), new headlamp inserts and a blacked-out grille.

He’s also deleted the front foglamps, thrown in a sportier front lip and blacked out all chrome- and silver-effect trim, from the side-mirror caps and exterior door handles to the roof tails. Round back, you’ll find a redesigned rear bumper housing a pair of menacing exhaust outlets, along with GTi badging and a black sports bar.

Of course, the chances of a GTi-badged bakkie ever seeing the light of day are positively tiny. What we do know, however, is Peugeot South Africa plans to introduce the standard Landtrek locally in 2021, with the firm saying it is "working on" securing both single- and double-cab variants (and thus not chassis-cab derivatives).

As a reminder, the newcomer shares much with the Changan Kaicheng F70, a bakkie sold in China (Peugeot and Changan have a joint venture in that country).

Powerplant include a 1,9-litre turbodiesel offering 110 kW and 350 N.m, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox from Getrag, and a turbocharged 2,4-litre petrol unit generating 155 kW and 320 N.m. The latter is offered in both manual and six-speed automatic guise. Both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations are available, with the latter boasting low range.
