A Volkswagen executive has confirmed the German firm will offer a “performance” version of the soon-to-be-facelifted Tiguan “very soon”.

Dr. Hendrik Muth, head of product marketing for the VW brand, told journalists during a Skype presentation attended by CARmag.co.za that a go-faster Tiguan is on the cards.

“We are going to do something on the performance side. We want to tease and wait a little bit,” Muth said, opting not to confirm whether the new model would indeed wear the “R” badge.

“It will come very soon and very early in the lifecycle. But what exactly our performance version will be, we will announce at a later time,” he said, adding fans should be “be prepared” and “be excited”.

Of course, what is widely believed to be the Tiguan R has already been spotted (numerous times) undergoing testing. The high-performance version of the strong-selling crossover is expected to draw its urge from VW’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering its oomph to all four corners via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Wolfsburg-based firm has slowly been rolling out the "R" badge to some members of its range of crossovers. In February 2020, VW revealed its new 340 kW Touareg R, while the covers came off the T-Roc R back in early 2019.
