A high-ranking Volkswagen executive promises the Golf 8 will "set new standards" when it debuts in 2019.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Ralf Brandstätter, the VW brand’s chief operating officer, said the next-generation version of the automaker’s popular hatchback would be “in a class of its own”.

Brandstätter made mention of the Golf 8 while outlining the Wolfsburg-based automaker’s plans for Europe in 2019.

“We are launching a raft of new products in Europe. The year starts with the T-Cross. It will be followed by the completely reworked Passat, which will have lots of new digital features.

“We will complete the year with the next generation of the Golf, which will set new standards. The Golf is in a class of its own, and I am sure the new generation will convince our customers of that again,” the 49-year-old said.

“Toward the end of the year, production of the all-electric ID Neo begins and, last but not least, we will add an emotional model – the T-Roc SUV cabrio,” Brandstätter revealed.

VW earlier indicated production of the eighth-generation Golf was scheduled to start in June 2019, boosting volumes at its main plant in Wolfsburg to around one million units a year.

In October 2018, Volkswagen seemingly revealed the taillamp design of the new Golf.
