The driver of a Volkswagen Polo hatchback has been arrested for reportedly hitting 179 km/h on the N12 in Gauteng.

According to Germiston City News, the 26-year-old male was clocked at 179 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N12 near the Germiston off-ramp. Officials from the City of Ekurhuleni said the driver claimed he was “late for work”.

Five other drivers were nabbed speeding during the same operation, clocked at speeds between 164 and 172 km/h. A day before, another 26-year-old male, likewise in a Polo hatch, was trapped at 174 km/h on the N12 in the Alberton area.

All seven motorists are facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, and are set to appear in court.
