Waiting for the Volkswagen T-Roc R to arrive in South Africa? Well, indications are that the high-performance version of the Golf-sized crossover will make landfall only after it is facelifted.

And we’d speculate that’s at least a couple of years away.

Martina Biene, head of the Volkswagen brand in South Africa, recently confirmed that while the T-Roc R was “under investigation” for a local introduction, it would “not come with this current range, but later”.

Soon thereafter, VW SA said on its Twitter account the brand hoped “to have it [the T-Roc R] when the facelift is launched” but added “this is still under consideration”.

The standard T-Roc range is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in early November 2020, more than three years after the MQB-based crossover was revealed on the global stage.

The T-Roc R, meanwhile, was unveiled in February 2019, powered by VW’s familiar 2,0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine producing 221 kW and 400 N.m. Oomph is directed to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,9 seconds.

Interestingly, VW SA ruled out the local introduction of the T-Roc Cabriolet, with product marketing manager Gina Handley confirming it is “unfortunately not planned for release in South Africa”.
