Volkswagen has released a fresh teaser video confirming a T-Roc R production model is indeed happening, and that the high-performance crossover is “coming soon”.

Of course, with the standard T-Roc (and the upcoming convertible version) seemingly not destined for South Africa, there’s very little chance this upcoming R-badged model will make it to local shores.

Still, it’s an interesting development since it finally confirms the Wolfsburg-based firm’s rumoured plans to expand its range of high-performance "R" offerings past the Golf. Indeed, earlier reports (and spy videos) suggested a Tiguan R could be hot on this latest model’s heels.

So, back to the T-Roc R. The teaser video shows the prototype being thrashed round the Nürburgring Nordschleife by development drivers Benjamin Leuchter and (rally legend) Petter Solberg.

Although it's wearing the customary camouflage, it’s clear the T-Roc R will draw plenty of styling inspiration from the Golf R. In fact, look closely and you’ll notice the familiar quad tailpipes, more aggressive bumpers and large alloy wheels.

And under the bonnet? Well, we’re guessing the high-performance crossover will also borrow the Golf R’s turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder heart, albeit in a slightly detuned state.
