Volkswagen has facelifted its T6 range – which includes the Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California – adding a fresh new look up front and extra onboard technology.

Dubbed “T6.1”, the new range will be offered with an array of assistance systems along with digital instruments and the latest generation of the Wolfsburg-based brand’s infotainment systems.

Updated turbodiesel engines will be offered, alongside an all-electric powertrain VW promises will allow a range of “more than 400 km, depending on the battery option”. A 2,0-litre TDI engine is expected to be available at launch, with outputs of 66 kW, 81 kW or 110 kW. A 2,0 TDI Biturbo with 146 kW will also be offered, as will manual and dual-clutch transmissions, along with either front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Interestingly, the updated range drops the current hydraulic power steering for an electromechanical arrangement, which has allowed new assistance technology (such as cross wind assist, a lane-keeping system, park assist, rear traffic alert and trailer assist) to be adopted.

Inside, the facia has been redesigned and can now accommodate the firm’s 10,25-inch digital cockpit as well as the third generation of its modular infotainment matrix (with Apple CarPlay), offered in 8,0- and 9,2-inch forms (and optionally with an integrated SIM card).

Other new features include a 230 V electric socket at the driver's seat and a lockable compartment in the double-bench seat on the passenger side. In addition, a loading option has been newly designed for what VW calls “especially long cargo items”, increasing the maximum cargo compartment length from 2 450 mm to 2 800 mm (or from 2 900 mm to 3 300 mm in the case of extended wheelbase models).
