A Volkswagen executive in Australia says that there are no plans to hike the Amarok V6’s output again, effectively ending the double-cab bakkie’s power war with the six-cylinder version of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

Earlier in 2018, the Wolfsburg-based brand announced a new high-output model, which generates 190 kW and 580 N.m courtesy of its 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart (and 200 kW on overboost “for short periods”). This, of course, puts it a nose ahead of the X350d, which makes 190 kW (sans overboost) and 30 N.m fewer than the VW bakkie, at 550 N.m.

Speaking to GoAuto, Carlos Santos, who holds the position of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia director, said that 190 kW was enough.

“I think that’s probably the top ; I don’t see us going any bigger in engine, particularly not in terms of displacement or cylinder count. It’s just not in Volkswagen’s way moving forward,” Santos told the Australian publication.

“The engine is capable of more power as it is in different variants of other Group products we make; it’s pretty much the same engine. But at the moment, there’s nothing on the nearby agenda to make it more powerful,” he added.

Volkswagen South Africa earlier told CARmag.co.za that it planned to bring this new high-output V6 to local shores at some point in 2019, although trim levels (and, naturally, pricing) have yet to be confirmed.
