The new Toyota Corolla Cross has been subjected to a crash-test evaluation by ASEAN NCAP, with the newcomer scoring a full five stars for safety.

The new car assessment programme for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN NCAP) tested the Corolla Cross in 1,8 form, built in Thailand and shipping standard with seven airbags and electronic stability control, plus offering various optional driver assistance functions.

In terms of adult occupancy safety, the Japanese crossover’s front compartment “remained stable in the frontal offset test”, with test data showing the vehicle “provided adequate protection to the driver’s chest and also to both occupants’ lower legs”.

The Corolla Cross furthermore scored highly for child occupancy safety and for its safety assistance technology.

So, will this new model be offered locally? Well, while Toyota South Africa Motors has remained tight-lipped on that subject, the company in February 2020 did confirm it planned to produce a new "passenger-car model” at its Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.

We’ve long speculated that model will turn out to be the Corolla Cross but we’ll have to wait until closer to the local launch in the final quarter of 2021 to find out for sure.

In the meantime, watch the Corolla Cross undergo its ASEAN NCAP crash test in the footage below…
