After a lengthy teaser campaign, the new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ has finally been unveiled in California, with the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based automaker claiming it has created “pure driving perfection”.

So, what exactly does “SVJ” stand for? Well, “SV” is short for Superveloce (or “superfast”), while the “Jota” suffix denotes the newcomer's “track and performance superiority”, in Lamborghini’s words.

Fair enough, really, considering that the Aventador SVJ has already grabbed the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for production vehicles, completing the 20,6 km course in 6:44,97 minutes.

Lamborghini says just 900 units of its wild new vehicle will be built, although a further 63 examples of the special edition “SVJ 63” (which serves as a nod to the brand’s founding year of 1963, and pictured below) will be produced.

Positioned as the most powerful series production V12-engined car produced to date by Lamborghini (and boasting a dry weight of 1 525 kg), the SVJ makes 566 kW at 8 500 r/min and 720 N.m at 6 750 r/min, allowing for a claimed 0-100 km/h times of 2,8 seconds. The automaker says the SVJ will hit 200 km/h in 8,6 seconds, before topping out at “more than 350 km/h”.

The updated powertrain features a new titanium intake valve, with a modified intake cylinder head duct. A new, lightweight exhaust system has also been fitted, reducing backpressure and producing what the brand describes as “the most emotive sound”. Furthermore, the seven-speed transmission has been tweaked for the car’s improved performance.

Lamborghini says its main goal in terms of design was a significant downforce improvement compared with the previous Aventador SV, along with an improved drag coefficient.

A new front bumper with integrated side fins features a new air intake and highlights the inclusion of Lamborghini’s further fettled active aerodynamics technologies. A tri-dimensional air outlet on the bonnet directs airflow, while larger side air intakes and new front side fins reduce drag and improve cooling. An improved underbody aero design works in conjunction with front diffusers and a new rear diffuser, while the fresh rear wing is meant to reduce turbulence while providing high downforce.

The SVJ’s suspension has also been reworked, with anti-roll bar stiffness improved by 50 percent compared with the Aventador SV, while the rear-wheel steering arrangement has been “further engineered”. And the SVJ’s four-wheel drive system boasts improved torque split, with the higher stability of the SVJ allowing a further three percent of torque to be sent to the rear axle. New Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber has also been specifically developed for the car.

“The Aventador SVJ is an innovative car and represents the absolute pinnacle of our super sports car product range,” said Lamborghini chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

“The challenge to Lamborghini designers and engineers was to improve the purest essence of the Lamborghini super sports car, drawing on every inspiration from a space ship to a jet fighter: all the most exceptional examples of super-fast, super-athletic, aerodynamic superiority.

“The Aventador SVJ takes another step into the future, shaping the potential for super sports car development,” he added.
