Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Nasser Al-Attiyah won Stage 4 of Dakar 2019 to extend his overall lead, while teammate Bernhard ten Brinke lost nearly three hours on the day after hitting a rock.

The result on the 405 km stage saw Al-Attiyah lengthen his overall lead to 08:55 over second-placed Stephane Peterhansel (Mini). Nani Roma, also in a Mini, is third overall after finishing fourth on the stage.

“We had a perfectly clean run today,” Hilux driver Al-Attiyah said. “The car ran like clockwork, we have no damage and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s stage, which will take us back to the service crews in Arequipa.”

Ten Brinke, meanwhile, severely damaged the left rear wheel of his Hilux, forcing him to stop and make running repairs. Giniel de Villiers also stopped to assist his teammate, but after working for more than an hour to remove the damaged parts, he continued with the stage. De Villiers finished 28th on the day to move to 30th overall.
