The folks over at CarWow have lined up three iconic BMW M products for a drag race; the E36 and E46 M3 and an M2 Competiton. All three cars, reigning from different eras, feature straight-six engines, manual transmissions and are rear-wheel driven.

The youngest of the trio is the M2 which sports a twin-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six, ushering 302 kW and 550 N.m of torque to the rear. The E46 uses a slightly larger but naturally aspirated 3,2-litre straight-six which, in standard guise, delivers 252 kW and 365 N.m; significantly less than it modern counterpart. Adding salt to this wound is the extra 20 kg of mass the E46 boasts over the M2.

Assumingly outgunned in this match-up is the E36 M3 however, the one that sits on the starting line has had some modifications installed such as a downpipe and new exhaust system. The owner estimates an output of 221 kW and 320 N.m which is much lower than the M2’s figure. Alleviating this is a significant weight reduction which brings the mass down to 1 400 kg.
