Mercedes-Benz’s eagerly awaited A-Class-based CLA saloon has been spotted uncovered near one of the company’s facilities in Iceland.

Bernhard Kohlmeier, who took the pictures from with window of his room at the Northern Light Inn at Grindavik, spotted this eye-catching front-wheel drive saloon that will slot into the Mercedes range below the C-Class.

This undisguised example was probably on its way to a photo shoot ahead of its official unveiling next year. While there is a strong resemblance to the Concept Style Coupe, which Mercedes showed off earlier this year in Beijing, the sporty wheels and body kit treatment suggests it could be the AMG-fettled CLA45 AMG or possibly a CLA250 Sport.

According to initial reports, a 2,0-litre turbopetrol engine developing 155 kW that will be coupled to a seven speed dual-clutch transmission sending drive to all four wheels will power the CLA250. The AMG model will also reportedly feature a similar powertrain setup, but power is believed to be in the region of 253 kW.

Lower-end production will mainly be offered in front-wheel drivetrain configurations with a choice of six-speed manual and the aforementioned automatic transmissions. On the engine front, expect to see the 2,0-litre turbopetrol joined by a 1,6-litre four-cylinder unit developing 90 kW and another 2,0-litre mill with 115 kW. The diesels will be represented by a pair of 1,8-litre units (80/100 kW) and a 2,2-litre developing 125 kW.
