Chana South Africa has confirmed that its first shipment of 300 Star light commercial vehicles, is on its way from China. The consignment is expected to arrive at the end of August.

Available with a choice of 1,0- and 1,3-litre fuel injected petrol engines, both models have an 800 kg load capacity and drop sides with a flat load bed.

The launch pricing has been announced, with the 1,0-litre Star costing R64 900, while the 1,3-litre will sell for R74 900.

The importer has said that sales will start in September. Click here for more on the deal between Autohaus Göbel and China's ChangAn Automobile Group. Though the announced prices are indicative and could be affected by exchange rate fluctuations, Chana SA is buoyed by the large number of pre-orders already received.

Trevor Thomas, general manager for Chana South Africa said, "We are encouraged by the high levels of interest in the Chana. Further orders have been placed with ChangAn Automobile, manufacturers of the Chana vehicles, to ensure an uninterrupted supply of product."

While the dealer network will be announced shortly, more service and spare parts are already on order in China.

"It is important to support this new market entry with parts. We are mindful of the fact that a commercial vehicle off the road waiting for parts costs money. We have made every effort to ensure that we have enough parts to adequately service the vehicles we sell through the dealer network. Technical personnel will also be trained timeously," Thomas added.

Other commercial vehicle derivatives, including a panel van, double cab and club cab, will soon be added to the range.
