CARtoday.com had a one-on-one interview with BAR Honda driver Jenson Button during the rising F1 star’s whistle stop promotional visit to Cape Town.

Button made an appearance at a jam-packed Rhodes House to promote the opening of the BAR commissioned and F1-themed “Moment of a Moment” photographic and visual art exhibition being staged by Swiss photographer Hannes Schmid.

The English driver’s first visit to Cape Town comes just days after he finished second in the German Grand Prix. At Hockenheim, Button qualified third, started thirteenth and scythed through the field to claim his seventh podium position of the year – a race that the 24-year old rated as the best drive of his F1 career.

”At the start of the season I never imagined that I could be challenging (Ferrari driver Rubens) Barrichello for second place in the world championship,” Button said. “But recently Ferrari have been making mistakes, which is unusual”.

And although it is commonly known that there is mutual respect between Button and Michael Schumacher, the Briton is not in blinding awe of the six-time world champion.

“Some people say F1 is boring, but Ferrari are simply good in every aspect of grand prix racing… Michael Schumacher is a key to their success, but I’m convinced Ferrari will still be able to win without Michael. There are many drivers who would be able to win grands prix in a car as good as the Ferrari”.

CARtoday.com: What would you say is the biggest difference between the driver you are today and the one you were 12 months ago?

Button: I have reached the ultimate level of my driving ability. Today, my driving style is similar to what it’s always been in terms of braking, the way I apply the throttle and steer the car. But my good relationship with the team and the handling characteristics of the 005 have helped me to be more confident behind the wheel.
