Alfa's 147 has started to show its age after a very successful run, and this weekend, Cape fans will have the opportunity to view the facelifted version, and more exciting models from Fiat, in the metal at the Cape Motor Show.

The 147 will be shown ahead of its official launch, when more details will be made available. First seen at the Paris Show last year, the 147's styling has been revised by Italian design house Giugaro and features new bumpers, a larger grille and newly-designed headlights. The tailgate and light clusters have been reworked for a sharper look at the rear.

Apart from the exterior changes, there have been minor adjustments to the suspension, changes made to the instrument designs, and a wider choice of fabric and fascia finishes to choose from.

A fresh new engine in the form of the 110 kW 1,9 JTD M-Jet will be added to the range. In addition, the Selespeed transmission has been refined and is claimed to be more responsive and user-friendly, while continuing to automate the clutch and gearshifts of the manual transmission via an electrohydraulic device.

The suspension, with a double wishbone up front and a McPherson layout at the rear, will now also come with a new Comfort setting. ABS with EBD, Vehicle Dynamic Control and ASR systems will be standard across the range and a host of equipment upgrades have also been promised.

Another new arrival on show for Cape Town motor enthusiasts will be the upcoming Fiat Strada half-ton pick-up. Rivalling the Ford Bantam and Opel Corsa Utility in terms of its size, the locally-produced Strada will be made available in three derivatives when it is launched shortly.

Also from Fiat, the new top-of-the-range Multipla 1,9 JTD Dynamic will be unveiled and comes with a host of luxury features ranging from steering wheel-mounted audio controls, to parking sensors and side airbags.

The Cape motor show takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on July 2 and 3.
