Renault’s ambitious 29 new models by 2009 renaissance has only produced the Koleos thus far, but the introduction of the Laguna Coupé should hopefully give the French company the impetus it needs to get cracking

The Laguna Coupé first broke cover in concept form at last year’s Frankfurt Show, showcasing a combination of svelte lines complimented by some of the company’s more familiar styling cues.

While the production version does look smart, its seems to have lost some of the design features that made the concept such an eye-opener. The raised roofline, shortened wheelbase and high-riding suspension conspire to take the edge off the overall design and leave us with a car that looks good, but not breathtaking.

Thus far, Renault plans to offer a pair of brand new V6 powerplants for the Coupé - A V6 dCi diesel engine that develops 173kW and a 3,5-litre petrol unit good 175kW. These units are mated with an AJ0 six-speed automatic transmission. According to Renault, this units close ratios offer good acceleration, with 100km/h arriving from standstill in less than 7 seconds.

The four-wheel steering option that made an appearance on the Laguna GT sedan, will also make its way across to the Coupé. Renault claims this system improves the car’s high-speed stability through corners, while also making the car more agile and maneuverable at low speeds.

Renault will release more information regarding this new model at the Paris Motor Show in October.
