A fresh report citing sources in Munich suggests that BMW will axe its twin-turbo V12 engine in 2019, effectively prematurely ending production of the M760Li xDrive.

According to the ?trusted sources? of BMW Blog, the M760Li will be killed off when the 7 Series receives its next facelift, scheduled for 2019.

The reason for the M Performance model?s impending demise? Well, as with the F80-generation M3, it seems BMW?s decision stems from new emissions regulations set to be implemented under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

According to the report, the obligatory addition of a particulate filter to the 6,6-litre V12 (which develops 448 kW and 800 N.m, making for a claimed 3,7-second sprint from standstill to 100 km/h) would cause "performance issues? for the M760Li.

Three versions of the M760Li are currently offered in South Africa: the standard model (R2 801 836), the Excellence variant (for the same price) and the 40 Jahre Edition (R3 187 836).

As part of the BMW Group, Rolls-Royce uses a similar engine, but it remains to be seen what sort of impact this (reported) decision will have on the British automaker.
