According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry’s June 2019 export sales registered “strong growth”, reflecting a year-on-year climb of 14,3 percent, with 30 604 units shipped off during the month.

So, let’s take a look at which automakers were the biggest exporters from South Africa for the month.

In June, Mercedes-Benz returned to the top spot (up from fourth), with 8 143 units of its C-Class exported from the East London plant. This represents a substantial increase of 4 252 units, month on month.

The Volkswagen Group thus dropped one place to second, exporting 6 293 examples (down a full 3 106 units) of its Polo hatchback from Uitenhage. Toyota, meanwhile, moved up two to third place, with an export figure of 6 133 units, including 5 686 examples of its Hilux, 352 units of the Fortuner and 95 of the Corolla sedan (all built at its Prospecton factory). This total is up 2 519 units on the Japanese firm’s effort in May.

The BMW Group dropped two spots to fourth, with its Rosslyn plant churning out 5 885 examples of the X3 for foreign markets, representing a decrease of 743 units compared with the preceding month. Ford, likewise, fell two places, finding itself in fifth after shipping off 3 359 units (comprising 3 355 units of the Ranger and four of the Everest) from its Silverton facility in the month. This represents a fall of 2 029 units over May.

Nissan remained in sixth, with its exports falling 11 units to 436 (made up of 434 Hardbody units and two units of the NP200), while seventh-place Isuzu declined by 42 units to total 199 (including 189 units wearing the D-Max badge and two with the KB badge, plus three MU-X units and five vehicles from its truck division).
