The sales figures for May 2020 are in ... and the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues as the country’s automotive industry gets back up on its feet.

According to Naamsa, May’s new-vehicle industry sales came in at 12 932 units, representing a 68 percent fall compared with the corresponding month in 2019, thanks to the COVID-19 global pandemic and the country’s hard lockdown (check out SA's best-selling passenger vehicles, too). The light commercial segment, meanwhile, showed a 74,8 percent drop to just 3 073 units compared with May 2019.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales? Well, after opting not to release South Africa’s individual model sales figures for March and April, Naamsa says it has included this information “for this month only” before it switches to a new subscription-based model from July.

Anyway, the locally built Toyota Hilux was at the very summit of the table with 796 units, while the expanded Isuzu D-Max range took second on 611 units. The Ford Ranger found itself in the unfamiliar position of third place, with 538 registrations.

The Nissan NP200, Nissan NP300/Hardbody, Mahindra Pik Up and Toyota’s Land Cruiser Pick-up, meanwhile, placed fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Volkswagen Amarok was eighth and the GWM Steed ninth, while the Mahindra Bolero grabbed the final spot on the table. That means there was no room for the Mazda BT-50 (8), Nissan Navara (7), Mitsubishi Triton (5) or Fiat Fullback (4) on the list in May 2020.

See the top ten list below, and have a look at February 2020’s figures (the last month reported by Naamsa) here.
