Volkswagen has officially opened its new facility in Ghana, where it will assemble as many as five models.

The plant in Accra is the fifth VW assembly location in sub-Saharan Africa (the others being South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda).

Universal Motors Limited, which has been a licensed Volkswagen importer since 2005, has been awarded the assembly contract for the “initial phase” of the project.

The Accra facility has an installed capacity to assembly 5 000 units per annum. The models to be assembled using semi-knocked down (SKD) kits are the Tiguan, Teramont, Passat, Polo and Amarok.

The Wolfsburg-based firm says the opening of its new vehicle assembly facility in the West African country is the realisation of a memorandum of understanding VW signed with the Ghana government nearly two years ago.
